VALENCIA, Calif., and MELBOURNE, Australia, Jan. 6, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- AVITA Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: RCEL, ASX: AVH), a regenerative medicine company, is developing and commercializing a technology platform, Spotlight, which targets multiple unmet needs for autologous skin repair, today announced that preclinical data successfully established proof-of-concept in two key areas of cell-based gene therapy - skin regeneration and epidermolysis bullosa.
Dr. Mike Perry, CEO of AVITA Medical, said: "We are delighted to be collaborating with leading scientists to explore opportunities for using Spray-On Skin™ cells for new and broad applications such as skin rejuvenation and inherited skin defects." "These data, although very early, demonstrate the promise of improved Spray-On Skin™ cells for skin regeneration, anti-aging skin cells for the treatment of aging skin, and gene-corrected skin cells for the treatment of epidermolysis bullosa."
A Novel RNA-Based Regeneration Approach In collaboration with researchers at Houston Methodist Research Institute (HMRI), preclinical data show reversal of cellular aging by pairing AVITA Medical's proprietary aerosol skin cells with HMRI's patented RNA technology , the skin regenerates successfully.Personalized, cellular-level skin rejuvenation is an area of great consumer interest, with a total addressable market of 15 billion.More than 3 million cosmetic procedures are performed in the United States each year, and approximately 1 million people undergo face lifts and tightening procedures.three
"We are encouraged by these early results and look forward to continuing our collaboration with AVITA Medical to explore technologies to reverse skin cell aging," said John Cooke, PhD, chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences and medical director of RNA Therapeutics at the Houston Methodist Research Institute's department."The skin is the body's largest organ, and molecular signals from senescent cells can have a major impact on the rest of the body. Therefore, reversing skin aging could have a major impact on other systems in the body."
Epidermolysis Bullosa In collaboration with scientists at the Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, preclinical data show successful skin regeneration from genetically modified skin cells to correct a disease associated with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa Symptom-associated mutation, a rare and incurable skin disease caused by mutations in genes encoding structural proteins, causes skin brittleness and blistering.
"These initial results are an important step in advancing our epidermolysis bullosa program," said Dr. Dennis Rupp, director of the Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine. "We look forward to continuing our work with AVITA Medical on this approach to delivering gene editing to patients. A new approach to skin cells."
Epidermolysis bullosa can lead to chronic wounds and, in some subtypes, an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma or death. There are no approved treatments, and current treatments are palliative and focus on pain and nutritional management, antipruritic, wound care, and dressing. As an orphan indication with 25,000-50,000 patients in the United States, the current cost of palliative care is estimated to be between 200,000 and 500,000 per patient per year. The total potential US market is estimated at 850 million.

About AVITA MEDICAL, INC. AVITA Medical is a regenerative medicine company with technology platforms positioned to address unmet medical needs in burns, chronic wounds and cosmetic indications.AVITA Medical's patented and proprietary collection and application technology provides innovative therapeutic solutions derived from the regenerative properties of a patient's own skin. These medical devices work by preparing RES® REGENERATIVE EPIDERMAL SUSPENSION, an autologous suspension of patient skin cells necessary to regenerate natural healthy epidermis. This autologous suspension is then sprayed onto the patient's area in need of treatment.
AVITA Medical's first U.S. product, the RECELL® System, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2018.The RECELL system is indicated for the treatment of acute thermal burns. The RECELL System, used to prepare Spray-On Skin™ cells from a small amount of a patient's own skin, offers a new approach to treating severe burns while significantly reducing the amount of donor skin required.Depending on the depth of the burn, the RECELL System is designed to be used alone at the point of care or in combination with an autograft.Compelling data from randomized controlled clinical trials conducted at major burn centers in the United States and actual use in more than 10,000 patients worldwide demonstrate that the RECELL System is a significant advance in the current standard of care for burn patients, and in clinical outcomes and cost savings.Healthcare professionals should read the Instructions for Use - REELL® Autologous Cell Collection Device (https://recellsystem.com/) for a complete description of the indications for use and important safety information including contraindications, warnings and precautions.
